Warmth v.s. Cold

Today I got a text picture from Julia showing us what we are missing. So to be polite I sent a picture back.

Tonight back in Mishicot there's snow and 9 degrees with a 'feels like -7 degrees'. That's very easy to give up. In Swainsboro, it's 62 degrees presently and it's midnight.

Yet the reality down here is houses weren't build properly for cold weather, especially the old ones. There are no storm windows, there were screens. There was no real efficient heating system, there were fireplaces. Then there were air handlers for both air conditioning and heat but below 35 degrees they were inefficient. Sadly fireplaces were blocked up with gas heaters put in there place. Many of those became hazardous and were replaced with vent-less wall heaters. And, that leads me to us.

These two pictures are of the living room fireplace. (The room with the stapled on wallpaper, scheesch) the fireplace is boarded up with an old heater in front of it. We no longer use is it as we have installed an energy efficient one. We finally became curious enough to remove the board to see what condition the fireplace is in. It was filled with a plastic trash bag and a brown paper page covered with soot and a few bricks. Why this surprised us I don't know. We closed it up again and said, "O K". That adventure will have to be another day. I don't believe the chimney is lined nor is there is a damper. the old heater will re removed by the plumbers that are coming back next week,

The white fireplace is in the living room. We're thinking the original living room as the other room gives us the impression that it was originally the bedroom of the house and a porch went all the way around. At some point the side porch became the bedroom with a bedroom above it and the original bedroom became the great room and incorporated the back porch. And now that my gibberish has you totally confused, welcome to our house.

Anyway, this is the fireplace in the room we are presently sleeping in, only because it was the cleanest room in the house when we got here. The fake logs are part of a gas heater, we can't use them, they have been tagged by the gas company. The regulator doesn't work. The fireplace has been closed off and we've been told that what usually is done is cement is poured down them. At some point we will replace the heater with a vent less log heater. For the first month here we froze until we purchase three new wall heaters.

This now replaces the one in the larger living room.

This one was added in off the parlor.

This one replaces the old one in the kitchen that has been removed.
